The climate of Tenerife is characterized by the mildness of the summer and the warmth of winter, and by the constant presence of the sun practically all year round. With temperatures ranging from 17ºC in winter to 25ºC in the warmer months, the atmosphere is cooled by the sea breeze and the trade winds. In addition, the georography of the island allows to find very different climates from one area to another, to the point that it is possible to play with the snow at the foot of Mount Teide and, on the same day, sunbathe and take a bath in the south coast of the island.
Tenerife has a great diversity of climates.
One of the most striking phenomena of the climate of Tenerife is that during the winter pleasant and warm temperatures are maintained at any point of its coastline, while the view delights in the completely snow-covered landscape of Teide and in the waves breaking on the shore. And it is that the goodness of Tenerife's climate allows you to enjoy the sun and the sea in any month of the year, but also the wonders of nature and the lushness of its forests and landscapes. The south of the island has more hours of sunshine per year, while rainfall is higher in the north, where there is also more humidity. This creates different landscapes and shades worthy of admiration when the island is known.
Another example is the contrast between the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which enjoys a warm climate throughout the year, and the center of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, which shows how temperatures drop notably at certain times in a few dozen kilometers. of the year.
The variety of microclimates found in Tenerife is striking, and which favor a great variety of plant species. In the north of the island, exposed to the action of the trade winds, it is possible to differentiate between the coastal area, with an average temperature that ranges between 19ºC and 23ºC thanks to the influence of the sea. Between 600 and 1500 meters of altitude the environment cools slightly and the humidity favors the cultivation of cereals and potatoes. Above 1,500 meters above sea level, the air is drier and snowfall can occur in winter, with temperatures that fluctuate considerably between day and night. In Las Cañadas del Teide, above 2,700 meters, some vegetable varieties grow that can only be found in Tenerife thanks to the climate of the area. On the more arid southern coast of Tenerife, the temperatures invite you to sunbathe and rest by the sea.
One day you wonder what reasons you have to hike and the answers pile up in your head. Because when you hike you feel deeply connected to nature, because the time you spend hiking is really for you, to order your thoughts. Perhaps the secret lies in what you discover when you walk: a beautiful and fragile flower that grows on the side of the road, surprise you with the sound of silence, or simply breathe fresh air. Who knows, there are so many things ... Because butterflies form in your stomach just before starting the journey; because there is no explanation.
