If you’re staying in Tenerife South between September 11 and 24, 2026, you’ve picked a great time to be here. This is when El Médano celebrates its Fiestas in honour of Nuestra Señora la Virgen de las Mercedes de Roja — two weeks of local tradition, live music, and beach-town energy that most visitors never get to see.
At The Tree House Hostel, just 2 km from El Médano’s centre, we’re perfectly placed for you to enjoy the festivities and still come back to a quiet, work-friendly space to rest and recharge. Our free shuttle runs three times a day between the hostel and El Médano, so you can join the party without worrying about how to get back.
Highlights worth planning around
🎉 Fiesta de los 80 — Friday, September 18 An open-air 80s-themed night in the Plaza de El Médano, running from 10 pm to 4:30 am, with live bands and DJs. Expect retro outfits, sing-along classics, and a genuinely local crowd.
⛵ Romería Barquera — Sunday, September 20 The most meaningful day of the fiestas. A maritime procession honours the Virgen de las Mercedes, with locals dressed in white walking her image down to the sea, accompanied by traditional dance groups, music, and folklore. If you only catch one event, make it this one — it’s one of the island’s most authentic traditions.
What to know before you go:
Exact timings can shift slightly year to year, so double-check the schedule on @comisionfiestaselmedano2026 in the days before.
- Dress code: white clothing is traditional for participants (“ropa de barquero/a”) — not required for spectators, but common and appreciated.
- The day starts with a street parade (pasacalles, floats, folk groups) through the town, usually late morning to early afternoon.
- The highlight is the maritime procession in the early evening, when the Virgin is carried out to sea by boat and greeted by crowds on the beach — this is the moment worth planning your day around.
- It runs into the night, with live folk music and a closing verbena, so it’s common to spend the whole day there.
- Get to the shoreline early if you want a good view — the beach fills up fast around the boat procession.
🕯️ Closing days (Sept 21-24) Fireworks, the emotional Procession of the Candles, live folk music, and family activities to close out the celebrations.
