Every other romería on this list happens at sea level or close to it. Vilaflor is different — it’s Tenerife’s highest village, at around 1,400m, right at the foot of Mount Teide. If you want a romería with pine forests and mountain air instead of coastal heat, this is the one.
When
📅 Date to be confirmed — usually late August, with a Baile de Magos a week or so before the Romería de San Roque itself. Check with the Vilaflor ayuntamiento or our full romería guide closer to the time.
What makes it different
The altitude changes everything: the setting is pine forest rather than coastline, and the temperature is noticeably cooler than El Médano the same afternoon — pack accordingly. It’s a genuinely different side of Tenerife from the beach towns most visitors stick to.
What to bring
- A warm layer — this is the one romería on this list where you’ll actually want one, even in summer
- Comfortable, stainable clothing for the wine and must
- Cash for stalls
What time to arrive
Midday starts are standard for Canarian romerías, but with a longer drive up from the coast, plan to leave El Médano by mid-morning to arrive in good time.
Parking
Vilaflor is a small mountain village with limited central parking — arrive early and expect to park a short walk from the centre once the procession route closes to traffic.
Vilaflor is about 45-50 minutes from El Médano, mostly uphill driving — worth the detour for the change of scenery alone. See our full guide to romerías near El Médano, and book your stay at The Tree House Hostel as your base.
