The Romería de San Miguel in San Miguel de Abona is one of the more accessible options if you’re staying near El Médano — a straightforward, traditional Canarian romería without a long drive.
When
📅 Saturday 19 September (the same weekend as Fasnia’s Los Roques — you could realistically catch both if you plan the day around it)
What to expect
A classic Canarian romería format: decorated carts, traditional dress, folk music, and free-flowing wine and gofio handed out along the route as it winds through the town.
What to bring
- Clothes you don’t mind getting a bit stained
- Water and a hat — most of the procession happens in direct sun
- Cash for the food and drink stalls
What time to arrive
Expect the procession to start around midday, in line with most romerías on the island. Arriving by late morning gives you a decent spot without too much of a wait.
Parking
San Miguel de Abona’s town centre is compact — as with any romería, streets along the route close to traffic, so park a short walk away rather than trying to get right into the centre.
San Miguel de Abona is about 15-20 minutes from El Médano. See our full guide to romerías near El Médano for the rest of the September calendar, and book your stay at The Tree House Hostel.
